all or some

‘Oh, but we are all on the autistic spectrum, really, when you think about it…’ That’s what people sometimes say. But are they right?

People might, in making such a statement, be trying to deny the complexity and impact of neurodivergency on those who live with it. It happens. It can be dismissive. Alternatively, the opposite could be true: they could be attempting to express ideas around inclusivity or commonality, emphasising how every human being has unique traits or experiences, which is laudable as far as that goes. You won’t know unless you dig a little deeper.

It’s important, though, to recognise that what amounts to a variant of ‘we’re all in this together’ overlooks the specific challenges and experiences faced by people with neurodivergencies like autism, ADD and ADHD. It may be that this overlook is accidental and stems from a lack of understanding or awareness, rather than intentional denial.

The thing is, seeking to be inclusive is a laudable aim. You don’t need to be one of us to be an ally. You don’t need to know everything or never get things wrong. You just need to be open, listening and empathic.

It’s crucial we foster empathy for others if we want to make the world a better place. Of course it is. We have a responsibility to educate ourselves, not only in regard to the diverse experiences of those with neurodivergencies, but also others outside our own field of reference, experience and understanding.

You’re either neurodivergent or you’re not. If you think you are but this has not been recognised and it bugs you, which it might and that’s understandable, then ask your doctor to refer you for an assessment. In the UK, though, if you’re reliant on the NHS for diagnosis, especially if you’re an adult, the waiting list is long.

Don’t be put off by that if you think diagnosis would help you, though. People often report that it does.
